Strengthen your Immune System by Healing your Gut

What are Microbiomes?

Microbiomes are the bacteria, viruses, and fungi found within our body. While we often associate these terms to sickness and flu, their ‘good’ counterparts are essential to our well-being. Research shows that people with a healthy gut in which good gut bacteria thrive, have stronger immune systems. In fact, about 80-90% of your immune system is in your gut, so it is these gut bacteria which are responsible for our health.

Do you experience inflammation?

When our good bacteria start to die off, the walls of our small intestine are left vulnerable. Holes start to form within the small intestine walls, allowing partially undigested food particles and toxins to directly enter the bloodstream. Our immune system and brain reacts to this threat immediately, leading to inflammation throughout the body.

Here are some simple steps we can take to replenish our healthy gut bacteria:

Step 1: Remove unhealthy foods from your diet

  • Wean yourself off sugar. Try alternatives such as honey, maple syrup, or natural sweeteners such as Stevia.
  • Stop with the processed foods! These foods are packed with trans fat and preservatives.
  • Limit the use of antibiotics. When used a lot, they destroy communities of gut bacteria, weakening the immune system.
  • Reduce stress in your life. Whether that means meditation, prayer, long walks, or reading, find what works for you to combat stress.

Did you know: Stress puts the body into a state of fight-or-flight! In other words, you are tense, wound-up, and unable to relax. This also puts a burden on the immune system since your body reacts with adrenaline, just as if you were in serious physical danger.

Step 2: Healing foods to rejuvenate your gut bacteria

After removing damaging foods, it’s time to begin the healing process with replacing and repairing.

1) Bone broth! Joint bones in particular, are rich in vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. Broth is one of the most healing foods, and can have a hugely positive effect on your gut health.

2) Fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi. These foods are rich in probiotics which are live bacteria that help replenish your gut bacteria.

3) Speaking of probiotics…try probiotic supplements! These are a great add-on to your routine because of how much they help replenish your gut bacteria and re-balance your overall gut health. They are helpful in combating digestive problems, bloating, and gas pain.
